Maruti Suzuki Q2 Net Profit Falls Despite Record Sales Surge
Maruti Suzuki Q2 Net Profit Falls Despite Record Sales Surge
Maruti Suzuki India Ltd, the country’s largest passenger car manufacturer, reported a 26.4% decline in its consolidated net profit for the second quarter of fiscal 2024, even as it achieved record quarterly vehicle sales. The company’s net profit for the period ended September 2024 stood at ₹2,466.1 crore, down from ₹3,349 crore in the same quarter the previous year.
Record Quarterly Sales Amidst Challenging Market Conditions
Despite the profit decline, Maruti Suzuki posted a 26% year-on-year increase in revenue from operations, reaching ₹53,355.5 crore, thanks to robust sales volumes. The total vehicle sales during this quarter reached an all-time high of 6,96,654 units, marking a 26.5% jump compared to the year-ago period.
The growth in vehicle sales was broad-based across segments, with small cars seeing a 35.9% rise and SUVs surging 68.2%. This surge was bolstered by a strong market response to the company’s newly launched SUVs. Maruti Suzuki’s domestic passenger vehicle market share increased by 2.2 percentage points to 40.8% during the quarter, showcasing the company’s strong market positioning.
Profitability Impacted by Rising Costs
However, profitability was under pressure primarily due to higher commodity costs linked to the West Asia conflict, which increased the cost of raw materials. The company also faced a sharp decline in non-operating income, impacted by mark-to-market losses on invested surplus. Total expenses in the quarter rose significantly from ₹39,018.4 crore to ₹50,619 crore compared to the previous year.
Operating profit, measured before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization, declined with margins contracting from 12% to 8.9%, reflecting the cost challenges. On a standalone basis, net profit also dipped to ₹2,414.9 crore from ₹3,302.8 crore a year earlier.
Why This Matters for Investors
Maruti Suzuki’s results highlight a key dynamic in the automotive sector in 2024: strong demand and volume growth are being offset by rising input costs and geopolitical risks affecting margins. While the record sales volumes demonstrate enduring consumer appetite and effective product strategies, the margin compression signals ongoing challenges in cost control.
Investors should note that the company has continued to expand production capacity, including commissioning new plants, which may increase depreciation costs in the short term. Management anticipates margin pressures linked to commodity prices to ease gradually as recent price hikes and cost control measures take effect.
What Investors Should Watch Next
Looking ahead, key metrics to monitor include Maruti Suzuki’s ability to sustain vehicle sales growth, manage commodity cost inflation, and improve profitability. Developments around the West Asia geopolitical situation and its impact on raw material prices will also play a critical role.
Additionally, how effectively Maruti Suzuki leverages its increased production capacity and navigates supply chain challenges will be crucial for future earnings. Market share trends and consumer response to new models, especially in the SUV segment, will provide further insight into the company’s growth trajectory.
Overall, Maruti Suzuki’s second-quarter performance underscores a balance between strong operational execution in sales and external pressures on margins that investors should carefully evaluate in the evolving Indian auto industry landscape.
