Tirumala Sets Up State-of-the-Art Rs 25 Crore Food Testing Lab with E-Tongue and E-Nose Technology to Safeguard Prasadam Quality
The sacred town of Tirumala is stepping into the future with the inauguration of a cutting-edge food testing laboratory dedicated to ensuring the purity and quality of the famed Srivari prasadam. With an investment of Rs 25 crore, this advanced facility is set to revolutionize the way prasadam quality is monitored, bringing in high-tech solutions like the E-Tongue and E-Nose — instruments imported from France that mimic human sensory evaluation but with unparalleled precision.
Food safety and authenticity have always been critical, especially when it comes to prasadam, which holds immense cultural and religious significance. The new lab will oversee the quality checks of around 60 different raw materials and ingredients used in preparing the prasadam, including those often scrutinized like ghee, cashew nuts, and raisins. This is in response to growing concerns about adulteration, particularly of ghee, which has previously raised eyebrows among devotees and temple authorities.
What sets this lab apart is its incredible technological edge. The E-Tongue can detect subtle flavors and chemical residues that traditional methods might miss, while the E-Nose analyzes aromas to identify contaminants and ensure authenticity. Together, these devices can detect close to 200 different residues and contaminants, offering a level of assurance that is rare in food quality testing.
This modern approach not only safeguards the sanctity of prasadam but also aligns with global standards of food safety and testing. Equipped with over 50 sophisticated instruments, the lab will consistently monitor prasadam production, ensuring that every offering distributed to devotees meets the highest quality markers.
The facility itself is housed in a renovated 12,000 square foot, two-story building located at Tirumala, encompassing an elaborate setup specially designed for comprehensive testing. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has played a pivotal role, sanctioning Rs 23 crore to kickstart this state-of-the-art venture, underscoring the importance of food safety in religious offerings.
Operations at the lab are slated to commence soon, with around 90% of the construction and outfitting completed. Devotees can look forward to consuming prasadam that is not only spiritually uplifting but also crafted under the strictest quality controls, combining tradition with technology in a beautiful harmony.
