Stainless Steel Industry Pushes for National Policy and Anti-Corrosion Mission to Tackle Imports and Corrosion Losses

The Indian stainless steel industry is raising a strong call for the government to introduce a comprehensive National Stainless Steel Policy along with a dedicated Anti-Corrosion Mission. This push aims to not only curb the rising tide of cheap stainless steel imports, particularly from China, but also address the staggering economic losses caused by corrosion across India.

Corrosion has long been a silent drain on the economy, with experts pointing out that the losses due to corrosion in the country run into several lakh crore rupees annually. The industry leaders argue that treating corrosion as a national emergency is crucial to safeguarding infrastructure, reducing maintenance costs, and promoting the use of high-quality stainless steel, which is more resistant to corrosion.

Currently, the domestic stainless steel industry is grappling with a significant challenge: a surge in low-priced imports that undercut local manufacturers. This challenge was exacerbated by the temporary relaxation of the Quality Control Order (QCO), which had previously kept strict quality standards in check. The industry has urged the government not to extend this relaxation beyond June 30, 2024, emphasizing the need to reinstitute stringent quality norms from July 1, 2024. The leniency in quality control has reportedly led to a flood of cheaper imported steel products, which threaten the viability of domestic producers.

In addition to reinstating the QCO, the industry is also seeking protectionist measures such as safeguard duties and anti-dumping investigations against unfairly priced stainless steel imports. There is a strong sentiment that without these measures, the domestic stainless steel sector will find itself increasingly vulnerable to external pressures, risking job losses and slowing innovation.

The proposed National Stainless Steel Policy would aim to unlock the full potential of the industry, focusing on areas such as manufacturing capabilities, innovation, and quality enhancement. Industry leaders believe a well-crafted policy framework could spur growth, enable the sector to meet rising domestic and international demand, and drive economic development.

Moreover, the call for an Anti-Corrosion Mission is tied to the broader economic benefit of reducing the massive losses attributed to corrosion-related damage. This mission would include the promotion of advanced materials like stainless steel in critical infrastructure, public awareness campaigns, and incentives for industries to adopt better corrosion-resistant materials.

Investors and market watchers are paying close attention to these developments, as policies favoring local stainless steel manufacturing could influence sectoral dynamics and the investment landscape. With growing global demand and India’s strategic position, a national policy and anti-corrosion initiative could position the country as a leader in stainless steel production while curbing dependence on imports.

In summary, the Indian stainless steel industry’s call for a National Stainless Steel Policy coupled with an Anti-Corrosion Mission reflects a strategic move to strengthen domestic manufacturing, protect the industry from unfair import practices, and address a vital economic concern through improved corrosion control. These efforts collectively aim to foster sustainable growth and create a more resilient industrial base in the country.
