Indian Oil and Air India Collaborate to Boost Sustainable Aviation Fuel in India

Published On: 19/08/20252.6 min read

In a significant stride toward greener skies and sustainable aviation, Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) and Air India have joined forces to promote the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) across the country’s aviation sector. This partnership aims to reduce carbon emissions from air travel, a major contributor to global greenhouse gases, and align with India’s broader environmental and net-zero goals.

The MoU signed between Indian Oil and Air India outlines a roadmap for the supply and increased adoption of SAF, with Indian Oil set to produce this eco-friendly fuel at its Panipat refinery. Production is slated to begin by December this year, with a unique approach that involves using used cooking oil as one of the primary feedstocks. This method not only promotes recycling but also helps in effectively handling waste oils while reducing the carbon footprint of flying.

Sustainable Aviation Fuel is a game-changer in the fight against climate change because it offers a renewable, cleaner alternative to conventional jet fuel. Derived from biomass, waste materials, or other sustainable sources, SAF can reduce lifecycle carbon emissions by up to 80% compared to fossil-based jet fuel. The SAF produced by Indian Oil will be ISCC-CORSIA certified, adhering to international sustainability criteria and making it eligible under global carbon offset frameworks.

The collaboration is also a key step toward India’s commitment under the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), adopted by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), aiming to achieve net-zero carbon emissions from international aviation by 2050. Air India, being one of the leading carriers in the country, plans to integrate SAF into its fuel mix to help decarbonize its operations and encourage industry-wide adoption of sustainable practices.

Investors and environmentalists alike are closely watching this development because the aviation industry has historically been a major challenge for emissions reduction given its dependency on fossil fuels. With increasing regulatory pressures and consumer demand for greener alternatives, this move is not just timely but necessary for the industry’s long-term sustainability.

The partnership between Indian Oil and Air India also showcases how public sector enterprises in India are stepping up their game in sustainability. Indian Oil’s innovation in converting waste cooking oil to SAF will serve as a model for other refineries and businesses, potentially triggering a new sector within the renewable energy market.

For the economy and markets, this development may nudge sectors linked to aviation and energy toward a more sustainable future, potentially opening new avenues for investment in green technologies and biofuels. Moreover, the initiative reflects India’s growing resolve to tackle climate change challenges through homegrown solutions and public-private collaborations.

In conclusion, Indian Oil and Air India’s partnership marks a pivotal chapter in India’s journey toward sustainable aviation. By blending innovative waste recycling techniques with large-scale cleaner fuel production, they are not only helping reduce the carbon footprint of air travel but are also setting a benchmark for others to follow. In the face of volatile markets and shifting global priorities, such moves underscore the importance of sustainability as both an environmental necessity and a smart business strategy.
