Bharat NCAP 2.0 Set for October 2027 Launch to Test Vehicle Chain Crash Safety

India is set to enhance vehicle safety standards with the introduction of Bharat NCAP 2.0 from October 2027. Announced by Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, this upgraded testing protocol will include evaluations for vehicle chain crashes along with advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) integration. The move is poised to significantly improve road safety by expanding the scope and depth of vehicle safety assessments in the country.

Expanding the Scope of Vehicle Safety Testing in India

The Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (Bharat NCAP), initially launched in October 2023, has provided voluntary crash-testing and safety ratings for new cars sold in India. Under the current version, vehicles undergo frontal and side crash testing at specific speeds, focusing primarily on adult and child occupant protection along with the availability of safety assist technologies such as electronic stability control (ESC) and ISOFIX mounts for child seats.

With Bharat NCAP 2.0, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways aims to broaden the safety evaluation by including chain crash assessments. This involves testing scenarios where multiple vehicles are involved in sequential collisions, reflecting real-world multi-vehicle accidents more accurately than previous individual crash assessments.

Introduction of Advanced Safety Features and Assessment Pillars

Bharat NCAP 2.0 will also introduce strict requirements for advanced driver-assistance systems, aligning Indian safety standards with global practices. The new assessment framework will evaluate vehicles across five pillars: safe driving, accident avoidance, crash protection, vulnerable road user protection, and post-crash safety. This comprehensive approach assigns scores based on a total of 100 points, emphasizing not only crash survivability but also preventive safety technologies.

For vehicles to qualify for the upgraded program, features like electronic stability control and side head protection through curtain airbags will become mandatory. These requirements underscore the regulators’ commitment to embedding safer technology in vehicles available to Indian consumers.

Why Bharat NCAP 2.0 Matters to Consumers and Industry

The upgraded testing protocol represents a significant step in improving road safety outcomes in India, a country with one of the highest annual road accident fatality rates globally. By introducing realistic, rigorous crash simulations such as vehicle chain crashes and requiring advanced safety technologies, Bharat NCAP 2.0 aims to encourage manufacturers to design safer vehicles and provide consumers with clearer safety benchmarks.

From a consumer standpoint, the enhanced rating system offers a more transparent and trustworthy guide for choosing vehicles based on safety performance. For automakers, it raises the bar to innovate and comply with higher safety standards ahead of future mandatory regulations.

What Investors and Stakeholders Should Watch Next

As Bharat NCAP 2.0 rollout approaches, industry players should monitor the detailed guidelines expected around 2025, which will provide clarity on specific testing procedures and scoring methodologies. Automakers will need to accelerate integration of ADAS and other safety features into their vehicle lineups.

Investors may observe how vehicle manufacturers adapt to these evolving safety standards and how compliance affects product planning, costs, and market competitiveness. The government’s focus on voluntary but robust safety ratings may also influence consumer buying preferences over time, potentially shifting market dynamics in the automotive sector.

Overall, Bharat NCAP 2.0 marks India’s commitment to raising vehicle safety to new heights, aligning with global best practices and aiming to reduce road accident fatalities through improved vehicle design and safer driving technologies.
