Maruti, Tata, Mahindra Raised E20 Fuel Concerns Privately Before Public Reversal

In a surprising revelation, emails have surfaced showing that major Indian automakers Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, and Mahindra had privately expressed concerns to the government about the rollout of E20 petrol (a blend of 20% ethanol with petrol) well before they publicly supported the fuel programme.

E20 petrol has been promoted by the Indian government as a cleaner alternative that aims to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and cut emissions. However, its introduction has sparked significant debate due to apprehensions about the compatibility of older vehicles with the higher ethanol blend and potential risks such as corrosion or vehicle damage.

According to disclosed emails, these top car manufacturers had advised the government on possible issues related to E20 usage in vehicles not specifically designed for such blends. They highlighted worries about durability, engine wear, and the need for further testing, especially for older models predominantly designed for E10 petrol (containing 10% ethanol). This candid communication contrasts sharply with the public stance shown by these companies after the rollout, where they participated in government-led press conferences defending the safety and readiness of E20 fuel.

Industry insiders suggest that these automakers initially sought a more cautious and phased approach, recommending that E10 should remain available as a protective fuel option for older vehicles to mitigate risks while consumers transition.

However, post-launch, intense public backlash emerged from vehicle owners reporting mileage drops, engine troubles, and higher maintenance costs blamed on E20 petrol. This led to confusion and criticism from consumer groups and opposition parties demanding transparency about vehicle compatibility and liability protections.

In response, the government pushed back against what officials termed a “misinformation campaign” mainly spread through social media, asserting extensive testing had been done and that fuel quality was closely monitored. Automakers, including Maruti Suzuki, maintained that warranty claims were being honoured and that tests on older E10-compatible models showed no significant issues with E20 fuel.

Nevertheless, some experts and sections of the automotive industry remain cautious, encouraging stricter quality controls on ethanol fuel and a more nuanced approach recognizing the diversity of India’s vehicle fleet.

For investors and market watchers, this episode underscores the intricate balancing act between environmental initiatives, industry readiness, and consumer protection. The evolving narrative around E20 petrol is a reminder that policy shifts in the energy and automobile sectors must be managed with transparent communication and thorough groundwork to avoid reputational and financial risks for stakeholders.

As the government promotes E20 to reduce emissions, it will need to keep collaborating closely with automakers and customer groups to address ongoing concerns and ensure a smooth transition that benefits the environment without compromising vehicle safety and owner confidence.
