Mumbai Rains Boost Water Levels: Seven Lakes Cross 90% Capacity with Three Reservoirs Overflowing

Mumbai is witnessing a significant respite from its water woes as relentless monsoon rains have dramatically replenished the city’s key water bodies. The seven lakes that supply water to the bustling metropolis have crossed the 90% capacity mark, a remarkable jump from the alarmingly low levels witnessed earlier. To add to the relief, three major reservoirs—Tulsi Lake, Vihar Lake, and Modak Sagar—have overflowed, signaling an abundance of water after a challenging period.

The recent heavy rainfall has been a game changer for Mumbai’s water storage situation. Until early July, the lakes collectively held less than 10% of their capacity, raising concerns over the city’s water security. However, the situation transformed rapidly with continuous rains filling the reservoirs. As of now, the total water stock across the seven reservoirs stands at over 90% of their combined capacity, with the three reservoirs topping full storage and actively overflowing.

Tulsi Lake, located inside the Sanjay Gandhi National Park and one of the smallest suppliers with a capacity of about 8,046 million litres, was among the first to overflow late one night recently. The overflow from Tulsi Lake naturally cascades into Vihar Lake. Vihar, which holds nearly 27,700 million litres, followed suit with overflow in the evening. Meanwhile, Modak Sagar, the second-largest lake among the seven, has also joined the overflowing ranks, further boosting the city’s water reserves.

These developments are especially critical because each percentage point in water storage translates to several days of water supply for Mumbai. The sharp rise from a dire low to near-full reservoirs provides a substantial buffer against dry spells and increases the resilience of Mumbai’s water infrastructure.

Despite the positive turn, city officials urge caution. The current water cuts in place—aimed at managing resources prudently—remain necessary until the reservoirs maintain a consistently healthy level well into the monsoon season and beyond. Officials highlight that a threshold of around 14.47 lakh million litres in combined storage is needed by the end of September to meet annual demand comfortably.

The increased water levels have been a welcome relief for a city that relies heavily on these lakes for its daily water needs. The robust inflows from the monsoon have dispelled fears stemming from a delayed start to the season, showing the vital role of natural rainfall in replenishing urban water supplies.

Looking ahead, sustained rainfall will be crucial for maintaining these water reserves through the year. There is also growing discussion among experts and citizens about enhancing water management strategies to capture surplus rainwater and channel excess lake flows to recharge groundwater — an essential step for Mumbai’s long-term water sustainability.

In sum, Mumbai’s monsoon this year has delivered a much-needed boost to the city’s lifeline reservoirs. The overflowing lakes are a positive sign amidst Mumbai’s perennial water challenges, providing hope for a more secure and stable water future in the days to come.
